We understand that you may have many questions. We will try to answer as many as we can here, but please reach out to us at therobinsrestdoula@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
An End of life Doula, simply put, is someone who helps another person navigate thier end of life journey. We provide non-medical, practical, emotional, spiritual support and education to adult clients at the end of life (and those around them) and ensure that they have the kind of death that honors them and their legacy. We also work with clients who are not at the end of life to help them plan for their comfort and peace at the end of life. We provide education on death, dying, and the end of life. We advocate for our clients wishes (in the case of a family member booking or purchasing services on a persons behalf, the person we are providing the service on behalf of, becomes the client regardless of who pays) to ensure that all clients are treated with dignity and respect.
I work with clients from all walks of life, and because we offer both End of Life Doula services and non-end of life services - as long as you are 18+ and living in British Columbia (in person services limited to the Abbosford and Chilliwack areas) - we can usually be of assistance. We do have a few important boundaries:
- We are not mental health proffesionals. None of our services are meant to replace mental health treatment services or resources.
- We are non-medical. This means that we cannot administer medication, feed our clients, reposition our clients, bathe our clients or provide any care to our clients that would normally be carried out by a licensed professional.
- We do not work with children. When a child is at the end of their life, we do not work with the child directly. Often what our support will look like in these cases is providing resources to parents or guardians, providing practical support to the adults, and providing education where needed.
- We do not typically work with those who have experienced traumatic loss. That does not mean we cannot support them. If a potential client has experienced traumatic loss, we will often refer them to the appropriate resources. We recognize that trauma should be worked through with the right people on your side, and we also recognize that licenced professionals are the most equipped to suppport someone experiencing trauma.
Like many End of Life Doulas, The Robins Rest was born from a need to fill in the gaps. Each and every End of Life Doula out there is unique and offers their own unique services and it's about finding the right one for you. For that reason, we do not feel it appropriate to be in competition with other doulas. We are all a community. Here are some reasons why you might like us:
- We are focused on providing diverse, person centered services.
- Compassion and a non-judgmental approach is at the center of what we do.
- We are Woman owned and Disability owned.
- We offer non-end of life services in order to ensure a holistic approach to life and death.
- We understand and celebrate that everyone is different. That means, we meet you where you're at.
Death and loss are often very overwhelming for those experiencing it. Having an End of Life Doula can help lighten the load. The End of Life Doula works with the client - and those in their circle - to create a plan for comfort and provides support, resources, companionship, and education throughout the end of life process. Those who have access to an End of Life Doula have the advantage of their wishes for their end of life being advocated for, the peace of mind that comes with dying prepared, and the resources to support the journey.
There is a saying amongst Death Doulas, "you're alive until you're not." By holding space for both life and death, you're holding space for the whole person and the whole human experience. This is a more holistic approach to care. Offering more diverse services is also our way of honoring the diverse needs of those who come to us. We are here to fill the gaps. Many clients who we hope to reach are clients who are traditionally underserved. There are a lot of services that would benefit many people that fall outside of the scope of practice of a Death Doula but utilize the same skillset. Basically, we offer the services we feel will have the most positive impact.
